What is the bridge's history?

The Baltimore bridge, often referred to as the Key Bridge, was dedicated in 1977 to honor Francis Scott Key, a poet from Maryland who lived in the 19th century and authored the lyrics for the Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States.


The bridge connected Baltimore Harbor with the Patapsco River, about 1.6 miles (2.6 km) in length. The greatest estuary in the United States, Chesapeake Bay, is where the river empties.

It was the third longest bridge of its kind in the world, with a main span of 1,200 feet. It is referred to as a continuous truss bridge. 

At the time, eight persons were visible on the bridge. They were all employed by a construction company that was hired to repair and patch potholes.

The consulate of Guatemala in Maryland states that two of the employees are from that nation.


Following the fall of the bridge, two people were rescued from the river; one was reportedly unharmed and the other was in a bad condition.

However, the US Coast Guard stated on Tuesday night that six more people most likely died as a result of the frigid water temperatures and length of time spent underwater. The organization announced that it was calling off its extensive, all-day search and rescue operation.

The mission's current priority will be on recovering bodies and providing comfort to the victims' relatives.


There was "some cargo or retainers hanging from the bridge" and hazardous debris in the river, according to officials, so first responders had to search in risky conditions to try to locate the men.

It was reported that the harbor's water temperature was roughly 9C (48F). When a person's body temperature falls below 35C, they may develop hypothermia.

According to Baltimore fire officials, automobiles have been found in
